Manufactured Luck, Genuine Happiness

A Little Optimism have a Disproportionately Large Impact

Sometimes all it takes is the smallest thing to make my day perfect. It might be an awesome video from a friend, a chance conversation on the bus, or even just looking up at the sky and breathing in the morning air. I've found that simple things like this tend to change my perspective on myself and reverberate throughout my day, leaving an effect on everyone and everything I touch.

Finding a Lucky Quarter

Some of the best small things that affect me happen as a surprise. Have you ever happened upon a dollar on the ground or found an extra quarter in your change from the vending machine? How does that make you feel? My reaction is always to think, "Wow! What a lucky thing to have happen!" I'll beam for the next few minutes and later that day I may even tell my friends about it. It feels silly honestly to say I could be that happy to find a buck or less and I don't have any understanding on why it excites me so but I know it does.

I also know it excites other people too. I've had friends excitedly tell me about how they found spare change or a dollar bill floating along the street and I get happy and excited for them too! That's where it gets really amazing. Something so small not only makes one person happy, but it also gives them a positive experience that they can share and that other people can buy into.

My Simple Scheme

Recently I've realized that I can use this to brighten people's day. When I'm at the vending machine and the change drops after I've bought my banana nut muffin.. by the way, those are the best muffins in the frickin' world! Anyway, after I've bought my BANANA NUT MUFFIN! and my change drops I just leave it there. I think that ends up being like $0.65-$0.75. I never know how it impacts the person who finds it, but I can imagine and that makes me feel great.

I've also started experimenting with dropping spare change on the ground. Not pennies. I don't think enough people even care enough to pick those up... no instead I've dropped a quarter in a parking garage and I'm going to start experimenting with dollars.

I don't delude myself into thinking that this is a very big thing to do, but I think it must brighten someone's day at some point and, to me, that's worth the cost.

Being the Change I Want to See in the World

This circles back around to a theme I've been focusing on lately. Whatever I want, I expect I'll need to make that happen for the world before I can get it. In this instance, I want the world to be more optimistic and I'm trying to help it along by giving people the opportunity to feel lucky. Pessimists who read this might think, "What happens when someone finds my dollar bill floating in the street and gets hit by a bus while chasing it?" and I would respond, "You obviously haven't found any of my loose change yet."
